The Javanese calendar created by Sultan Agung is indeed the result of a merger of the Saka and Hijri calendar systems.

For Muslims, Muharram is a very historical month that is respected and forbidden from things that are not good.

Sura or Suro means ten, which comes from the term Ashura, which is the tenth day of the month of Muharram.

However, the celebration is still held on the night of 1 Suro, not on the 10th.

According to the Cultural Observer of Sebelas Maret University (UNS) Surakarta Prof. Dr. Bani Sudardi stated that it was a form of cultural crossroads because the Javanese initially adhered to the Saka calendar.

Therefore, for the Javanese, the first night of Suro is considered a sacred night and is commemorated with various rituals, such as tirakat (restraining lust or abstinence) and meditation (meditation).
