From this research, Labov found that the use of the sound ‘r’ in the conversations of sales assistants in these stores differed according to their level of social and economic class.

From the example of William Labov’s previous research in Manhattan, we can see that Labov studied the sound or phoneme /r/ used by sales assistants in three different stores.
