The man whose full name is Julius Robert Oppenheimer (J Robert Oppenheimer) is an American physicist scientist (US).

Oppenheimer is known as the ‘father of the atomic bomb’.

The nickname was earned when the US was running the Manhattan Project, research in the era of World War II to make nuclear weapons.

Oppenheimer served as director of the Los Alamos Laboratory and was responsible for research and design of the atomic bomb.

The US decision to develop an atomic bomb was partly prompted by a letter sent by physicist Albert Einstein to US President Franklin Roosevelt, warning of the possibility of a humanitarian catastrophe if Nazi Germany succeeded in developing and building an atomic bomb.

Quoting the History site, J Robert Oppenheimer was born on April 22, 1904 in New York City, United States.

He comes from German Jewish immigrants. Oppenheimer pursued higher education by attending Harvard University to study chemistry in 1922.

Oppenheimer then traveled to Cambridge in England to begin graduate work in physics.

Working in the Cavendish Laboratory under Nobel Prize winner JJ Thomson – the man who detected the electron – Oppenheimer began his research into the atom.

A year later, Oppenheimer went on to study at the University of Göttingen, Germany, one of the world’s leading centers for theoretical physics.
